3 Tips to Easy Speaking
By Astrid Stromberg of Brilliant Essence
Speaking in public can be frightening. Stage fright, stumbling over words, fighting to remember your text, being frozen in the moment, having the giggles, or simply looking like a fool are common fears for any novice speaker. Whether you are presenting in front of a Board room, a comedic act in a theater, a workshop for paid clients, talking to your future employer, or selling to customers, you want to get the message through clearly, effectively and with the best results, without a qualm. Here are a few tips: - Look the Part - don't confuse your audience with your friends. If you are going to deliver jokes, don't look like a jogger in a parc just because you want to look casual and hip. If you are going to sell, don't look as if you're the 6th. copy of the first that walked in the door. Think not about what you want to appear as. Think about what your clients expect you to portray. - Prepare your Performance - visualizing your performance before hand is a technique used as much in professional sports as it is by all successful business gurus. Repeating your text alloud as you act the part out at home prepares your body and mind to feel comfortable in the situation you will be in later. Knowing what you want in advance is key and going over and over it in your mind and body is scientifically proven to enhance skills and performance. - Anchor your Confidence - Fear can creep up on you at any time should your confidence waver. Anchoring confidence is another technique all pros use. For example, when you are feeling truly confident, when you know you are focused and deliberate, at that moment, take a conscious awareness as to how you hold your hands. Repeat this movement several times, on and off during your speech and use it at any moment you feel vulnerable. The hand action will immediately have you regain composure because of the neuro-biochemical link you have established in your brain with the confidence you systematically have when you hold your hand in that specific way. Your success is often linked to your comfort zone in delivering your message. The last, and perhaps most important tip of all is that you BE whom you want to be. If you can convey your own comfort within yourself, you'll have no problem conveying your message to others. Let's hear you! Let's see you! And let there be a Successful YOU! |
